Philippines has long relied on rice as a staple food, deeply embedded in its culture and daily life. However, recent situations inside and outside the country have brought about a series of challenges that have significantly impacted the country’s current rice situation. In order to safeguard the country’s rice supply amidst emerging threats in global food supply, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. meets with the private sector stakeholders for a discussion on the rice industry in Malacañan Palace on August 8, 2023.

In a comprehensive report delivered by the Department of Agriculture (DA), the various factors posing threats to the nation’s rice production and exports are discussed. The report highlights the influence of the El Niño phenomenon, offering insights into the present state of the country’s rice supply, projections on supply-demand dynamics, the 2023 rice forecast, import trends and requirements, as well as suggested courses of action.

Representatives from the private sector, convened by Private Sector Advisory Council (PSAC) Lead Convenor and Aboitiz Group President and CEO Sabin Aboitiz, express their concerns regarding the alignment of data between private rice traders and the Department of Agriculture.

PBBM then reassures that the Administration is actively engaging in government-to-government (G2G) interactions with foreign partners to promptly address pressing issues within the country’s rice industry.
